Yesterday I signed, on behalf of Nigeria, the Paris Climate Agreement.  By this signing Nigeria has committed to reducing Green House Gas Emissions unconditionally by 20 per cent and conditionally by 45 per cent, in line with our Nationally Determined Contributions.  I am confident that with support from development partners, we will meet the above targets. I appreciate the very genuine efforts by President Francois Hollande of France in drawing global attention to reviving the Lake Chad Basin, and for galvanizing the political will that led to the global consensus in reaching the Paris Agreement last year. We are continuing our effort to resuscitate the livelihoods of more 5 million people in the Lake Chad Basin region, which has borne, in recent years the brunt of the Boko Haram insurgency – apart from the negative impact of climate change manifesting in substantial shrinking of the Lake.  Our commitment to Climate Action also extends to the Niger Delta, manifesting in the political will and action to clean up Ogoniland, improve livelihoods, protect the environment and take climate action, and ensure the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
