THE COURT OF APPEAL SITTING IN LAGOS GRANTS MUSLIM STUDENTS IN PUBLIC SCHOOLS THE RIGHT TO WEAR HIJAB

It is with great delight that we announce to the entire Muslim ummah of Nigeria that the Muslim Students' Society of NIGERIA (MSSN) has won the suit instituted by the Society against Lagos State Government over the right of female Muslim Students to use Hijab in Public schools.


The Court of Appeal sitting in Lagos has affirmed the fundamental right of the female Muslim students to use Hijab in a judgment delivered today 21st July 2016. The 5-man panel of Justices of the Court unanimously  reversed the decision of the High Court of Lagos State which earlier denied the students this fundamental right.

This decision has laid to rest the controversies that surrounded the wearing of Hijab in Public schools not only in Lagos State but Nigeria as a whole as the judgment of the appellate court binds all authorities in Nigeria.

Meanwhile, the Society recently won a similar case at the High Court of Osun State. The judgment in the Osun State’s case is currently being challenged at the Court of Appeal. The decision of the Court of Appeal given today, no doubt, clearly foretells the fate of the appeal in the Osun State’s case.

MSSN Lagos State Area Unit salutes the sagacity and industry deployed by the Court of Appeal in the just delivered unbiased and well researched judgment. The Court has further demonstrated, convincingly, that the judiciary is indeed the last hope of the common man.

We appreciate all members of the Society and the entire Muslim ummah for our perseverance and calmness while the case last. It is indeed a long walk to freedom.

We urge all our members to continue to be law abiding and respect constituted authorities in their respective schools. We should however, feel free to report any form of abuse, harassment or embarrassment from any quarter to the MSSN authorities in the Schools, councils and the State Unit as the case may be.
