“My brother, e ku exchange rate oh. ” “Excuse me?” “I am greeting you. I am saying how are you and the exchange rate palaver.  The dollar wahala”. “So, that is why you are saying  e ku exchange rate.  Is something wrong with you Yoruba people?        Must you turn everything into a form of greeting?” “You are insulting me?” “I am making a statement” “Meaning?”  “Any serious matter at all, you and your people must turn it into something else.  E ku exchange rate?  What kind of greeting is that? Yoruba will say e ku election, e ku democracy, e ku change, e ku ana, e ku gbogbo e, gbogbo e, e ku democracy.  I am tired of answering you people and your cynical greetings.” “The people don’t mean any harm.” “That was how somebody came to me the other day and said  e ku Mecca, Medina, e ku Qatar.  I felt like slapping the guy.” “Ha.” “I don’t like hypocrites.” “Would you have felt better...

Valentine’s Day Celebration : The Islamic Perspective

Image
Question may be answered in several ways:  1- In Islam, the festivals are clearly defined and well established, and no additions or subtractions may be accepted. They are an essential part of our worship and there is no room for personal opinion. They have been prescribed for us by Allah and His Messenger  .  Ibn Taymiyyah,  may Allah have mercy on him, said: "Festivals are part of the laws, clear way and religious ceremonies of which Allah Says (what means):  'To each among you, We have prescribed a law and a clear way'  [Quran 5:48] and  'For every nation We have ordained religious ceremonies which they must follow.' " [Quran 22:67] Like the Qiblah (the direction faced in prayer), prayer and fasting. So there is no difference between joining them in their festival and joining them in their other rituals. Agreeing with the whole festival is agreeing with disbelief. Agreeing with some of their minor issues is the same as agreeing with them in...

Today marks 40 years since General Murtala Ramat Mohammed was assassinated.

Image
Today, February 13, 2016 marks 40 years since one of the greatest Nigerian heroes - General Murtala Ramat Mohammed was assassinated. Understandably, Murtala represents different things to different people. One thing stands out though: his six months reign as head of state remains indelible in our history.  Murtala was a true son of Africa, who had a clear direction of where he wanted Africa to be and how he wanted Africans to be seen and accepted by the rest of the world.  General Murtala Ramat Mohammed was born on November 8, 1938 to Risqua Muhammed and Uwani Rahamat in the ancient and historic city of Kano. He had his early education in Kano and finished up at Government (now Barewa) College, Zaria in 1957. General Mohammed enlisted into the Nigerian Army and was sent to Britain for training at Sandhurst Royal Academy as an Officer Cadet. His other advanced training courses and successes paved way for his rapid promotions in the rank and file of the Nigerian Army. ...
